What Is Lime Stone

Limestone is a soil amendment – a material added to the soil for its beneficial impact on the physical, chemical and biological nature of the soil. It is a completely natural product made from a dolomite mineral that contains both magnesium and calcium. Due to its high calcium and magnesium content as well as potassium and other essential minerals, Lime Stone is a superior reconditioning agent.

Physical Impact: Calcium loosens and stabilizes soil structure which improves air, water and nutrient uptake, as well as root development.

Chemical Impact: Calcium and Magnesium stabilize pH levels and improve ion exchanges, which are necessary for plant nutrition

Who uses Lime Stone

The calcium carbonate content of limestone rocks has been used from the earliest civilizations, dating back to 14 000 BCE, to its extensive use in modern times. It is a valuable resource that services the needs of a multitude of industries. From Building and Construction to Heavy Industries to fillers in Manufacturing goods and Agricultural use.

Limestone deposits with a calcium carbonate content around 90% can be quarried to be used by the farming sector. By crushing the limestone, various grades can be produced. These products are marketed as agricultural lime. Limestone is mainly used in commercial and biological farms.

Agricultural Use

Soil acidity is one of the factors that can influence plant growth and can seriously limit crop production. By spreading agricultural lime onto the paddock or soil, the calcium carbonate content of the limestone is capable of neutralising some of the acid in the soil. This also has the effect of freeing up some of the soil minerals, such as phosphates, and making them available for absorption into the plant.

Calcium

Calcium is essential for living organisms, particularly in cell physiology where movement of the calcium ion into and out of the cytoplasm functions as a signal for many cellular processes. As a major material used in mineralization of bone, teeth and shells, calcium is the most abundant metal by mass in many animals.

Magnesium

Plants require magnesium to synthesize chlorophyll, essential for photosynthesis. Magnesium in the center of the porphyrin ring in chlorophyll functions in a manner similar to the iron in the center of the porphyrin ring in heme. Magnesium deficiency in plants causes late-season yellowing between leaf veins, especially in older leaves, and can be corrected by applying to the soil either Epsom salts (which is rapidly leached), or crushed dolomitic limestone.
